Hey guys and gals, happy Monday to you…I hope your having a fantastic day I am! Today, we are going to look at an important question, can anybody really make money online for free?

Seeing as your looking to make money online, you must have seen all the wonderful ads and websites that promise “free money” or “free surveys” etc. Most ways to make money online however will require investment and if your REALLY serious about making money…your are going to have some up front costs.

Everyone loves the word free and it’s also one of the many “POWER” words that people online use to attract customers, one example being on a landing page. “Grab your free eBook on blogging”. Free is powerful, but free is also misleading in many ways.

“IF MAKING MONEY ONLINE WAS REALLY FREE, DON’T YOU THINK EVERYONE WOULD BE MAKING MILLIONS?”

Sure, there are free ways to make money such as free paid to click sites for example, but my friend nothing is free exactly. For example those paid to click sites require months and months just to even make $20. You see the platform is free but your time is not free.

People try free ways to make money online, but then they forget that time also has a cost. Most people fail online because they go after these types of things. Let’s have a look at some things I am going to cover in this post:-

  • Free Vs Paid blogging platform
  • Free traffic Vs paid traffic
  • Free online tools Vs paid tools

Free Vs Paid blogging platform

Ok, so lets start with this shall we? As your aware one of the best and most popular ways to make money online is through blogging and I want to look at two different platforms, free vs paid. Blogging is awesome, it can also become very profitable if done right…but why do so people choose the free route?

I tell you why because they search online and see the words “free website” or “free blog”. Sure, if you want to use this platforms there is nothing wrong with that. But free in this case doesn’t mean awesome. There are many limitations on free blogging platforms and the people that make money are the platform designers who run ads on your free blog.

Why you should stay away from free blogging platforms:-

  1. They will limit the amount of customization you can do
  2. Your domain often looks messy and this will lose trust with people (they all know what BlogSpot is)
  3. They run ads on these platforms and you can’t always select what they add
  4. You will lose uniqueness and value
  5. No comment moderation avaible , so spam is very high (not good for business)

Now, here is why you need a platform like WordPress or a paid theme:-

  1. A very clean professional domain, you just need to buy one and link it to the site
  2. Endless customization and a more personal unique feel
  3. People see you as more of an authority and see you have skills
  4. You can capture people’s emails
  5. You can run ads that YOU select, not pre set ones
  6. If you want to make real money you need a self hosted, unique blogging platform

Free traffic Vs paid traffic

Oh the good old traffic debate, this is going to be a good section..are you ready? There are many ways to get traffic online paid or free. Some people prefer free ways and some prefer paid ways. But sorry its just not that simple and I will explain why. As I mentioned above, time is not free either. So with free traffic generation you will pay with time and with paid traffic, you obviously pay in dollars.

What are the pro’s and con’s of free traffic:-

PRO’S:-

  • The traffic is free and you won’t have to have a marketing budget
  • You won’t have to monitor it so much and consistently be watching it
  • Residual traffic can some from these sources for many, many years
  • If you have lots of time, this is something that will work

CON’S:-

  • Free traffic is hard to scale and sometimes it can’t be scaled at all
  • It can take a lot of time to build up anything worth while
  • Testing is hard to do, because you won’t get instant results
  • Free traffic is low quality sometimes

I personally try and stay way from free traffic, although traffic from social media is great etc..sometimes the relevancy and level of targeting that I need is not present and then it is not worth my time or energy, work smart not hard.

What are the pros and cons of paid traffic:-

PRO’S:-

  • You can access a very large amount of people very quickly
  • You can see if a product will convert with some quick testing
  • The ability to target is there and this really helps
  • You can control elements of your marketing more

CON’S:-

  • You have to spend money to make money (I think that ok and more of a pro, but some people see it as a con)
  • If you don’t have a big budget you campaign can stop after a couple of days
  • There is a lot to learn, especially on PPC platforms
  • There is a lot of mis guided information

As you can see there are pro’s and con’s to both free and paid traffic, so it’s really up to the individual and of course the many factors that come with it.

Free online tools Vs paid tools

Moving on let’s have a look at free and paid tools. Now, as you aware there are thousands of tools online such as keyword tools, website tools etc. What I think we will do for this section is take one example and then I can look at free VS paid and see what we have (is that ok?)

EXAMPLE:- FREE KEYWORD TOOL VS PAID KEYWORD TOOL

Ok, so for our free keyword tool will use google keyword planner:- Ill just mix in the pro’s and con’s. The keyword tool is free and easy to use, you only need to sign up for a google AdWords account to access it. However, the results are often not what the real numbers are, say for example search volume. So this needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I have found that the load time of the platform sometimes is very slow and this is not good for unpatientant people. The results can also be wrong if not filtered properly.

Ok, moving on lets look at a paid tool will use long tail pro for example:-The initial cost will put some people off, because some people don’t want to invest in business tools. These platforms are a lot more complex and will require more learning.

On the positive side though this paid tool can uncover results that are a lot more accurate and precise and can really help grow your keyword outlook.
